Roswell Prepared for Economic Woes

by Mayor Jere Wood

The Bible tells us that Joseph won his freedom by interpreting the Pharaoh’s dream and advising him to save in times of plenty to prepare for times of famine. The Pharaoh took Joseph’s advice so that when seven years of famine followed seven years of feast, Egypt was prepared.

When times were good, Roswell was careful to live within its means and wisely set aside a little money each year in reserve. Now, Roswell along with the rest of the world is facing hard economic times. The money Roswell set aside when times were good will allow the City to maintain essential fire and police services without raising taxes. This money will also allow the City to maintain its roads and parks without going into debt.

With the downturn in the economy, there’s also been a downturn in prices. With lower prices, now is a good time for Roswell to make improvements to its roads to lessen traffic congestion, and drill wells and build water towers that will increase its water supply. Roswell’s reserves will allow the City to continue to make improvements and become a better place to live even in tough economic times.

Just as Egypt helped its neighbors and profited by selling them grain during a famine, Roswell can help local businesses and its citizens by investing in the community, and at the same time, make Roswell a better place to live.
