The Roswell Youth Football and Cheer Association will be hosting an evening with Vince Dooley, legendary University of Georgia Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, on Thursday, August 12th at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center (950 Forest Street, Roswell, GA).  Coach Dooley will begin speaking at 6:30 p.m. He will conclude the evening with a question and answer session and book signing.  Advanced ticket prices are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 years old and younger.  Tickets may be purchased the night of the event for $25.  The event will include a silent auction of ACC, SEC, and a New Orleans Saints head coach autographed footballs.  For event questions please visit www.roswellrechornets.com or email Heather McCormick at mhmccormick@charter.net.

The weather finally warmed up a bit and the Night Out with the Girls attendees came out by the dozens to enjoy a night of noshing and shopping at the new All Y’alls Food and Gourmet Market!

The “Fab Pack” Girls enjoyed great food provided by Relish and a top notch chef’s presentation by local celebrity chef, Hans Rueffert (hanscooks.com)…not to mention lots of fun visiting with girlfriends and enjoying all of the unique local products that All Y’alls has to offer!

The Night Out with the Girls event was the largest ever with over 125 attendees and all of them went home with a FABULOUS “SWAG” goodie bag and 4 went home with additional door prizes that were just “To Die For”!

Roswell United Methodist Church (RUMC) is recognized throughout the metro area for its Sounds of the Spirit Concert Series. As part of that Concert Series, the 2009 Christmas Festival Concerts will be presented in the Sanctuary of RUMC on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 and 6:30 p.m. The 130- voice Sanctuary Choir under the direction of Dr. Michael O’Neal, renowned organist Tom Alderman on the 93-rank Möller pipe organ and the Celebration Ringers Hand Bell Choir, directed by Lisa Stover, join together to present an awe-inspiring concert of holiday music.

Enjoy the sights and sounds of the season with your family and friends amid the beauty of the candlelit RUMC Sanctuary as the Christmas story is shared through majestic pageantry, scripture and song. “Through carols and songs, both old and new, which remind us what it might have been like at the birth of the Christ Child, we will offer beautiful music, and perhaps a perspective on the Christmas season rarely explored in the midst of our rushed lives,” explains O’Neal, director of worship arts at RUMC. From the opening strains of the processional carol “Joy to the World” through the choral benediction of the Silesian folk tune “Beautiful Savior,” your heart will be warmed by this annual holiday celebration.

The re-creation of the nativity will transport you to the manger scene resplendent with visits from the shepherds, visions of angels and the adoration of the Magi bringing  to life the true miracle of Christ’s holy birth.

You could search far and wide, travel hundreds of miles and spend lots of money and still not have as much fun as you can have at Historic Downtown Roswell’s Alive After Five monthly celebration. On evenings every third Thursday April through October, Historic Downtown Roswell becomes the place to be. Shops stay open offering discounts, prizes and special goodies and events, artists are on hand at galleries to mingle with the crowds, restaurants offer dining and drink specials, and musicians perform on three different stages. They don’t call it Alive After Five for nothing!

Since its inception in 2005, the anticipation mounts and the planning starts earlier each year. The downtown is transformed from winter to spring as the trees leaf out, the dogwoods blossom and street-side alfresco dining grows in popularity. The nights grow warmer, and the days longer, heralding the arrival of this much-anticipated Downtown Roswell tradition. “Let’s hit Alive After Five; Hey, you going to Alive After Five? Meet you at Alive After Five,” – and so the popular chatter goes.

Historic Canton Street becomes the epicenter of fun. Lampposts are adorned with bright balloons is shades of orange, red and purple, live music provides a soundtrack for the fellowship and fun and a sea of revelers forget the worries of the day and celebrate the finer pleasures of stimulating art, fine food, fellowship and the entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated by these thriving downtown businesses.

“Alive After Five attracts local residents and visitors who come out each month in droves to meander the streets of Historic Roswell, running into friends and neighbors, while enjoying live entertainment, casual shopping, and a bite to eat,” says Sally Johnson of the Chandlery, a popular Downtown boutique.

Local musicians will perform at three venues during the evening: Heart of Roswell Park, Plumtree Village and Eclectic Finds. The local talent changes each month, so be sure to check the schedule for the listings so that you do not miss your favorite entertainers. Got kids? No problem—many of the merchants cater to families, offering moonwalks and bounce houses or clowns.

Parking is limited in the Historic District, but additional parking has been arranged and is available at the City of Roswell Municipal Complex (City Hall) Parking lot, Wachovia Bank parking lot on Magnolia Street, Roswell United Methodist Church parking lot at the corner of Magnolia Street and Mimosa Street, and The Board of Trade parking lot off of Alpharetta Highway. For your convenience, there are free Trolley Shuttles from the parking lot of City Hall to many destinations downtown.

Local chefs are creating new tasty menus for the upcoming 19th Annual Taste of Alpharetta happening on May 14 from 5 to 10 p.m. at Wills Mark on Old Milton Parkway. The event has become the largest “taste of” festival in the South, with crowds expected to exceed 60,000.

Taste of Alpharetta showcases more than 60 local restaurants ranging from 5 Seasons North to Wildflour, to Schakolad Chocolate Factory. To provide enough delicious tastes for the 60,000 attendees, the restaurants will prepare more than 360,000 sample plates. Participating restaurants serve up an amazing array of appetizers, entrees and desserts from their menus for just 50 cents to $3 per sample. Menus will include barbecue pork sliders, crabmeat cheese rolls, basil chicken salad, chocolate-covered strawberries and much more. Tickets may be purchased on-site the evening of the event or pre-purchased at Alpharetta City Hall.

“The Taste of Alpharetta is one of our city’s most anticipated events,” says Mayor Arthur Letchas. “Each year our committee invites new restaurants and seeks entertainment for the entire community to enjoy.”

The Culinary Arts and Music Stage will feature chef competitions from 5 to 7 p.m. following with live music from 7 to 10 p.m. Top chefs pair against one another in contests for best appetizer/salad, best fast casual entrée, best dessert, best fine-dining entrée and best presentation. Judges will be writer, cooking show host and food editor for North Fulton Living magazine, Hans Rueffert; Atlanta Cuisine editor, Tom Maicon; freelance restaurant writer, Helen Cauley; and director of Salud! Cooking and Lifestyle School at Whole Foods Market, Ashley Brooke.

Attendees can vote for their favorite restaurant at the Culinary Arts and Music Stage, designating only one restaurant as the Taste of Alpharetta People’s Choice recipient. Additional judges will walk restaurant row to award the Best Booth presentation.

After dining at all of their favorite restaurants in one night, Taste of Alpharetta families can look forward to playing at Wacky World and on the dozens of fun inflatable activities, Guitar Hero, rock climbing, trains and more in the Fun Zone. By the Lion’s Club pavilion at Wacky World, the Reptile Wrangler will feature educational reptile shows all evening plus exhibits. Children can also enjoy wacky hair, face painting, balloon art and a full farmyard with pony carousal. Metro Atlanta radio stations will add to the evening’s entertainment.

The city of Alpharetta encourages everyone to use the free shuttle system. Park-and-ride shuttle options will be available at Alpharetta City Hall (on South Main) Publix Super Market (on Old Milton Parkway at Haynes Bridge) and Milton Center (the old Milton High School at Milton Avenue).

Admission, shuttle and parking are free for the 19th Annual Taste of Alpharetta. Park-and-walk options are available at the Wills Park Equestrian Center (on Wills Road) and Alpharetta Community Center (on Roswell Street).
